Synergies emerge between backup and MDM in mobile device data protection/backup

The results from the Wave 17 Storage Study show an overlap between mobile device management (MDM) and server backup software vendors in the mobile device backup/data protection arena, contributing to potential synergies in the mobile space. Server backup software has high market penetration, with 98% of enterprises reporting in-use implementations in 1H 2013, in addition to 33% increasing their budgets for the technology. MDM, implemented by 59% of enterprises in 2H 2013, is also experiencing budget growth, with 46% planning budget increases in 2014. About 15% of large and midsize enterprises had adopted mobile device backup/data protection in 1H 2013, and a further 8% had in-pilot/evaluation, near-term and long-term project plans. In addition, non-company-issued mobile devices are spreading at approximately twice the rate of company-issued ones, which may provide more growth for this technology.

Six of the vendors with the most selections in mobile device backup/data protection are major players in server backup software, namely Symantec, EMC, Microsoft, IBM, CommVault and HP, while four are MDM leaders, namely BlackBerry, MobileIron, Good Technology and AirWatch. Symantec, Microsoft and IBM (via its $300m acquisition of Fiberlink Communications in November 2013) have implementations in all three categories. In addition, desktop virtualization is also closely aligned with MDM; for example, Citrix completed its acquisition of Zenprise for $325m last year, and VMware acquired AirWatch for approximately $1.5bn this January.

Selected Vendor Implementation

Sometimes mobile device backup/data protection is managed by different divisions, resulting in a variety of offerings within one enterprise, while in other cases the process is handled in a more centralized approach, like by the desktop group. The availability of MDM offerings may provide incumbent backup software vendors with new cross-selling opportunities in the growing mobile device arena and help their existing customers centralize mobile device backup/data protection processes. Parts of the recently published ’2014 M&A Outlook – Storage and systems’ report (client login required) discuss some of the potential M&A activities in storage and MDM.

TheInfoPro’s respondents had the following comments about mobile device backup/data protection:

  • “Many vendors – different divisions use different technologies.” – LE, Healthcare/Pharmaceuticals
  • “Handled by desktop group.” – LE, Telecom/Technology
  • “RIM on BlackBerrys. But we’ll phase out and switch to iPhones, I think.” – LE, Public Sector
